From Scratch

02 - 17 July 2009

A season of events exploring the legacy of experimental British composer Cornelius Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra.

For the summer period we are devising a series of events with contemporary artists and musicians around the legacy of Cornelius Cardew including forum, live performance, screenings and talks in the lead up to the  exhibition ‘Cornelius Cardew’

which will take place at The Drawing Room in November 2009. From Scratch is conceived in collaboration with ICFAR (International Centre for Fine Art Research) University of the Arts, London.

From Scratch will involve artists and musicians exploring the legacy of Cornelius Cardew and will take place 02 -17 July 2009. These events will introduce new audiences, in particular students and young people, to the work of Cardew, which resonates with the interests of a large number of younger artists today, as much as a recognition of the revival of interest in the ideas of Cardew and his music since the 1970s. The series of events will involve contemporary artists, musicians and academics to include a forum, talks, film screenings, live music, and performance events.

Monika Grzymala’s installations function somewhere between an architectural intervention and immense line drawings. Grzymala’s recent installation for The Drawing Room is a personal response to the chaotic London sky-line, to the architectural space of the gallery and to the ideas explored in the Hayward Touring exhibition, ‘The end of the line: attitudes in drawing’, of which this commission is part. ‘The end of the line: attitudes in drawing’ a Hayward Touring exhibition in collaboration with mima, Middlesbrough and The Bluecoat, Liverpool in association with The Drawing Room.
