Tannery Arts

TANNERY ARTS is a charity set up in 1993 by the artists David Austen, David Foster, Chris Pauling, and Alison Wilding. It is an association of artists concerned with providing inexpensive studios for fine artists in the London Area and also with making art accessible to a public audience through providing facilities for presenting or exhibiting works of art.

History
Tannery Arts was founded in 1993 and was housed in several Victorian buildings in Bermondsey. From 1994 to 1998 Tannery Arts ran a successful exhibition space in a squatted warehouse on Bermondsey Street SE1 funded on a minute budget partly by letting the space to out of town colleges and universities wishing to showcase their graduate degree shows in London.

In 1996 the organisation took possession of several premises in a rambling and semi derelict site along the Regents Canal in Hackney. In 2000 Tannery Arts collaborated with three curators, Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane and Katherine Stout to set up a new and unique exhibition space– The Drawing Room - as an independent project of the organisation.

The organisation has a small core of executive officers: David Austen and Andrew Bick as Tannery co-directors who are mainly responsible for seeing that the company is meeting its objectives and ensuring that the organisation runs smoothly; Paula Naughton, the administrator, dealing with correspondence and accounts; Mary Doyle, Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout, concerned with the organisation of The Drawing Room. The board of Tannery Arts oversees the work of the named persons and is involved with the planning and decision making regarding the future of the organisation. Our board members are David Austen (TA), Andrew Bick (TA), Chris Dyson, Greg des Jardins, Thomas Kibling, Kate Macfarlane, Katherine Stout, Sally Williams, Alison Wilding (TA).
